Thanks Sue
I'd found the mysterious granddaughter in a pedigree via Familiysearch where she'd been ascribed to William and Margaret - I was a bit sceptical, as I'd found nothing else to suggest that they had children (although I haven't looked at their wills). I took my first look at census transcripts (not "originals") yesterday and they certainly do clarify a lot of relationships. I wasn't looking at the right one to solve this issue but I'll keep trying. I don't think I knew of the two marriages (maybe I did?) - there are so many Margaret Kneens and Margaret Radcliffes that I'm struggling to keep track of which is which! Interestingly, the Westray Hastings who witnessed that will is the son of one of William Kneen's cousins.
What exactly does "pledges" mean in a will?
Thanks.
