Hello Gary. I am not familiar with Emily Jane Cain and I have seven "John William Gelling"'s to choose from. Given you mentioned "Ellison" in your note, I guess the best candidate is John William Gelling born 5 Mar 1883 Douglas s/o Thomas Henry Gelling & Margaret Jane Ellison. I tagged the burial of John William Gelling 23 Jul 1854 Braddan age 71 to be him. In the 1911 census he is 28 Single, Working on Farm, born IOM Douglas living with his father and stepmother Thomas H Gelling 65 and Jane E Gelling 65 at Mount Rule Braddan. He must have married after 1911 and I haven't researched him. Would you be so kind to tell me when they married and how many children they had? Did they move to New Zealand?
I see that the above John William Gelling had a younger brother named "Thomas Ellison Gelling", so I must be on the right track here. He was baptized 19 Feb 1893 Braddan, and he is aged 18 working on the same farm as his brother John William in 1911. Also there is another brother Richard age 24 working on the farm, plus a farm servant named Robert D Kelly 14. The census record says that Thomas H & Jane E had been married 2 years. First wife and mother of the 7 children (Thomas Henry, Margaret Jane, John William, Robert Ellison, Frances, Richard and Thomas Ellison) was Margaret Jane Ellison d/o William Ellison (1829-1904) & Margaret Costain (abt 1826-1899) md 17 Jan 1850 Arbory (9 children), and granddau of Richard Ellison (abt 1796-1849) & Joney/Judith Cubbon (abt 1796-1849) who married 22 Dec 1821 Patrick. Latter two were buried 2 weeks apart 3 Oct & 17 Oct 1849 Kirk German. Margaret Jane Gelling nee Ellison was buried 6 May 1897 Braddan aged 45.
Thomas Henry Gelling bapt 21 Sep 1845 Braddan s/o John Gelling (1818-1902) and Margaret Jane Cottier (1811-1877) who married 31 Jul 1841 Marown. They farmed at Virginia Farm, Braddan and were 2nd cousins on the Gelling side, both descended from John Gelling (1722-1812) and Catharine Killey (abt 1716-1806) of Ballamillaghyn Farm, Braddan.
I am not related to this branch of Gellings, but several people who correspond regularly on this board are descended from the Ballamillaghyn group.
