Biographical Directory of the South Carolina

House of Representatives.

118 CAIN / CALDWELL

Extract.

6 During the American Revolution, there probably were two Patrick Cains who lived in
the District Between Savannah River and North Fork of Edisto River. One served as a first
Lieutenant of a volunteer militia company (1775 – 1776), married Mollie Griffin (or Mary
Griffith), and was killed by Tories either in 1779 or 1781. The relationship between
this man and the one who served in the House could not be determined.
In addition, an-
other Patrick Cain lived in Abbeville District (ca. 1777 – 1800), served as a private in the
American Revolution (1776 – 1781), and died in 1836 in Kentucky. Discrepancies in extant
documents and inconclusive evidence prevented a more definite biography of the House
member.
