Fr Malcolm Cowin was the parish priest at Wymondham, Norfolk, just after the war, and he commissioned my father, the architect Donovan Purcell (founder of Purcell Miller Tritton Architects) to build a church which would be both the parish church and also a permanent Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOW) memorial. The church was opened in 1952, and is still in use (though presently threatened by a developer and a possible nearby sale of land to the supermarket Asda). Each year a FEPOW memorial service is held at the church, which I attend together with my mother, and it's an immensely moving occasion. We left Wymondham in 1953 and moved to Norwich, and I don't know how much longer Fr Cowin stayed in Wymondham. The FEPOW memorial church is the only one in the world. My father died in 1973.
I hope this information may be useful
best wishes,
Brigid Purcell
