Re: John Corkill
In Response To: John Corkill ()

There was a very long thread about different branches of this family earlier this year. Please see at:
www.isle-of-man.com/genealogy/messageboard/index.pl?page=1;md=read;id=544109

If you use "Search" (at top of screen) with the name of their farm Ballajora + "margaret cannell" you will find even more messages.

According to Constance Radcliffe (an expert on Maughold farming families, and IOM social history), there were two Corkill families farming in Ballajora in Maughold, and one family was identified by the nickname "Dick" to distinguish them from the many other Corkill families.
There was John 'Dick' Corkill c.1715-1796 and John 'Juan Dick' 1747-1823. Later descendants from the Ballajora (Dick) family were still known by this name added to their own. She wrote "Corkill Dick was so firmly attached to this family that it was several times used in the burials register, and is sometimes heard colloquially today" [1979].

John 'Juan Dick' 1747-1823 married Margaret CANNELL of Ballaskeally Onchan in 1772, and were the parents of John 1773-1859, Patrick 1774-1843 marr Cath Creech, Thomas 1777-1869 marr Margt Fargher, Edward 1780-, Andrew 1785-1786, Mary 1787-, William 1790-, James 1793-1870 marr Margt Callow, & Esther 1799- marr John Kerruish. John 1747-1823 (Juan Dick) who marr Margt Cannell was the son of John (Dick) 1715-1796 who was the son of Ewan 1688-1754 & Isabel, according to CR.

If you give more names and dates for the generations down to your grandparents or gt grandparents (depending on those not living) I can give you more information, and confirm you are following the correct tree.
