Thank you for all that information - I also read the entry as accountant but someone else said it could be annuitant! Although accountant is a jump from schoolmaster (?) it would fit in with subsequent family history as every generation - he was my great great grandfather - has had a professional accountant and even my son is an auditor with Ernst & Young in London. I am new to all this but I will follow your advice as to headstones but how does one access Manx wills? Am very grateful for your input.
