I was interested in the name Flaxney Stowell in Manxnotebook so clicked in some more on him & found he was actually the father of Leighton (P.L Stowell) my headmaster at Ballasalla school. He was a great teacher but strict & I still remember loads of Manx history from him. Pupils went on days out with him - I took my own son when he was little to see Pherrick the fisherman sitting on the rocks waiting for his mermaid wife to return out by Pooil Vaaish.(spelling?) We truly believed it at school but as an adult going down to Pherrick he is only rocks not a stone man ! Mr Stowell made all his stories so interesting & there were many of them. His wife, Anna, used to make toffee to sell to us chn to help with school funds.
