I've now made more progress with William Archibald born c 1792. From the will of George Archibald in 1797 (help from Frances) William seems to be the illig son of George's son John and an Ann Quayle. Previously I had been looking under 'Archibald' for Will's birth without success . Now found him under mother's name Quayle although he was married with the name Archibald. I haven't been able to find a marriage for John Archibald to Ann Quayle nor siblings for William. Was it common for illig children to be registered as illigitimate with the mother's name but then use the father's name throughout later life ? Maybe his parents never did marry. Thanks for any help with this research.
