Hi,
This is a second query re Edward Barnes, 1882-1952 who was manager of the MER from 1936 to his death.
Eddie was born in the Newcastlke area in 1882 where his father was a customs officer, the family moving to the IOM before 1891. By 1901 they were living at 20 Berkeley St, Douglas near Woodbourne Sq and Eddie was training on the MER.
Some time c1907, Eddie moved to Canada and some timeprior to that date married Prudence Sarah James, the daughter of a dentist, John Fry James and Sarah Ann Weller (of Brooklyn). "Auntie Pru" was born in DOuglas in 1877 and the James family lived at West View, which overlooked Woodbourne Sq, so the Janes and Barnes families lived in close proximity.
In 1907, in the Algoma Province of Canada, a Dorothy May Barnes is shown as born to Edward Barnes, and this is a perfect match for the Dorothy who died in 1933 aged 27 yo in a hospital accident.
I am thjerefore happy that Edward and Pru Barnes were living in Algoma in 1907.
By 1911, Eddie had moved to Calgary as Supt Engineer of the Calgary Power station. In 1915 he took warservice with WHite Star line as an electrical engineer and in 1922 returned to the IOM as Assistant Chief Engineer to the MER. In was at that stage that my mother met her distant relative Dorothy and they became close friends.
The two problems I have are.
1) The marriage of Edward Barnes to Prudence Sarah James, some time after 1901 and prior to 1907. I cannot trace it on the Island. Can anyone help ? Pru sometimes appears as Prudence but also as Sarah or as both names !
2) Dorothy May Barnes was born in Algoma registration dist some time in 1907 but I have no specific date or location. Any suggestions.
3) And now for the hard one !! Eddie trained on the MER, so was familiar with electric railways AND power stations, hence his career from 1911 to 1915. The MER is a US-style Interurban electric railroad, and the Algoma area of Canada was the home to several pioneer interurban electric railways, so it is possible that Eddie went out to Canada as a railway engineer to Algoma and later moved to Calgary as a Power Station Supt engineer. Can anyone add any further snippets of data ?
Can anyone come up with an actual date of birth in Canada for Dorothy May Barnes ?
