Re: Thomas Gelling & Iron Foundry
In Response To: Re: Thomas Gelling ()

The foundry story sounds like it could be basically true but with the wrong generation of Gelling in it. Thomas Gelling & Elizabeth Willson had 2 sons who lived long enough to take over the foundry when Thomas died in 1838: Richard and James George. The latter, born 1820 married Elizabeth Bridson in 1853 and he died in 1861 shortly after the census, with no issue. The census's show Eleanor lived on dividends and rents on Circular Road Douglas for some 30 years. The other brother Richard born 1812 md Nessie Howard 1837 and he lived to 1903 age 90. Neither brother had children. It seems of the family of 10, only the youngest, Catharine Isabella b 1827 & md Simon Alfred Rogers 1853 had issue that survived childhood, but they lived in Cheshire. I don't know who took over the Foundry as it's a piece of history I haven't delved into.
