I've been looking at all the children of William Cubbon ( b circa 1811) and Ann Clucas (b circa 1811) ( married 22 Jan 1839 Braddan ):

William b 1811 must have died just a few days after the 1851 census was taken. By 1858, the children were orphans:

Isabella Gale who was the 80 year old in the 1841 household, and who was buried in plot #716, must have been connected but I haven't tried to figure out yet whether she was linked to Alexander Clucas or to Charlotte Lee, or where the Kellys fit into the picture.
By 1861, the 5 surviving children were spread between Clucas and Cubbon relatives, apart from the eldest, Isabella b 1839, who I think may be this one:

Isabella went on to marry James Mc Glashan 17 May 1864 Braddan, and I've found the family in the subsequent censuses.
In 1861, William b 1841 was with his mother's brother, James Clucas, and his family:

In June Q 1870, William married Ann Elizabeth Richardson in Chorlton, Manchester. I've found them in 1881 and widow Ann E in 1891 and 1901, but I haven't found them in 1871.
In 1861, Ann Jane b 1843 and Charlotte b 1847 were staying with Clucas relatives:

Ann Jane Cubbon married James Fell 23 Aug 1870 Douglas St George, and I've found them in the subsequent censuses. Charlotte Cubbon b 1847 is still a mystery. I'm wondereing whether she may have accompanied her brother, Thomas b 1845, and his wife to America in the late 1860s. Thomas and wife returned to England before the 1871 census, with their eldest child who was born in Brooklyn NY. Thomas married Anne Elizabeth Bannister Sep Q 1867 West Derby, Liverpool.
Deciding Thomas's whereabouts in 1861 is the main reason I've written this message. In the following censuses, he was living with his family in West Derby and his age and occupation were given as:
1871 --- age 26 soap and oil dealer.
1881 --- age 36 shopkeeper
1891 --- age 46 chandler tallow
1901 --- age 56 slater and plasterer.
Death from BMD:
Thomas Cubbon age 71 Sept Q 1916 West Derby 8b 565
It's definitely the same Thomas Cubbon b Douglas in those 4 censuses because he had a string of children with easy-to-track names.
So, to decide which Thomas Cubbon 1861 entry is his:
A tree compiler on Ancestry has chosen a 14 year old at King William's College. I believe that this 14 year old belongs to a different family (poss bap 17 Jan 1847 Onchan as Robert Thomas Cubbon to Joseph Cubbon and Rachael Marsden) who in the censuses look affluent enough to send him to KWC. He's Thomas R Cubbon in 1851, and is absent from the household in 1861. Another reason I don't think he's the right TC concerns the way the pupils are listed in the census. They seem to be in some sort of descending order of age, so I'm guessing that they were in upper school, lower school groups. On the same page as our 14 year old are 24 boys age 11-14, with just two 16 year olds amongst them (maybe in the wrong year group because of protracted illnesses ?) and I don't believe that KWC would have made the mistake of giving the age of a boy who was 16 years 3 months, as 14.
The 1861 entry which seems to be the right one is this:
1861

Robert Cowell head mar 34 plasterer b Bride
Elizabeth wife mar 35 b St Anne
John son 10 b Douglas
Frances dau 8 b Manchester
Thomas Cubbon nephew 16 ap plasterer b Douglas

In 1901, TC gives his occupation as slater and plasterer ---- a skill he learned as a teenager while living with his aunt and uncle ?
Robert Cowell was a prominent builder in Douglas according to the 1919 obituary ( in Manx Notebook memorial notices ) of his son, John Thomas Cowell, HM Receiver General. So the 10 year old John Cowell in the household above is JTC 1851-1919. His mother was Elizabeth Cubbon b Santon, and since there weren't many Cubbon children born in Santon in the 1820s, I think that this is her baptism:

I think these are probably Elizabeth's father and some of her siblings in 1841:

This is probably the burial of her father:
CUBBON, Thomas 70 San 24 Oct 1847
Donna says there's no MI for him, but that the burial register indicates that he was a sumner.
Going back to the 1861 household of Robert and Eliz Cowell, in order for Thomas Cubbon b 1845 to be a nephew, Elizabeth would have been a sister of Thomas's father, William Cubbon b 1811. I'm having a problem with this, so any help would be appreciated. It would mean that Thomas Cubbon b 1778 would have been married first to a Mary Kelly, and then to a Margaret Kelly.
If this Thomas Cubbon were the one bap 10 May 1778 Braddan, he'd be a son of one of the two William Cubbon / Cath Gelling couples who were having children in the 1760s-1790s. These were discussed here a few weeks ago. The younger of the two couples didn't marry until 1781, so this Thomas would belong to the Cath Gelling who was the daughter of John Gelling and Ann Faile of Ballig. This Cath Gelling was a sister of Robert The Schoolmaster Gelling. Eric will no doubt put me right on this.
Any help with choosing the correct 1861 census entry for Thomas Cubbon b 1845 would be appreciated.
