Re: Clybane House, Braddan
In Response To: Clybane House, Braddan ()

Clybane farm near Douglas would almost certainly refer to the Clybane you identify, near to the Cooil crossroads. Like a lot of other Manx farmhouses it has an "old" wing at the back, and a very imposing "New" wing at the front. This wing is in the fashion of the 1850's, with very big gables, usually with arch headed windows each end of the big attics.

The property belonged in 1867 (Woods Atlas - Index online thanks to Elizabeth Barlow)
to James Gelling. About 20 years later an Edward Gelling is in a Directory as owner of part of Ballacottier. My grandfather's first cousin John Thomas Kinvig moved to Clybane around the early 1900's. At some stage they bought the property and it stayed in the family untill his son retired from farming in the late 1980's. His children all live nearby and are supporters of the Chapel at the crossroads.
My guess is that the Gellings built the front wing, and may have let this separate or together with the rest of the farm. I would like to see the photo - my address en gee crowe at hotmail dot com.
