Garratt and Kayll families

Hi,
First of all, a VERY big thank you to all the people who have helped with earlier enquiries for the book I am completing on MANX shipping. It has resolved a lot of queries and to my amazement, an enquiry about the bank manager Fred Brew for the book added a vast swathe of Joughins to MY own family tree, which was a bonus.

What I am working on now is the "Birth of the IOMSPCo". The guy who built the Mona's Isle was John Wood of Port Glasgow, and in 1831, he got engaged to a MANX girl, Isabella Kerr Kayll, the daughter of J J KAYLL, brewer of Douglas. Sadly she died when visiting her prospective in laws, and Wood was devastated, asking to be allowed to bury her in the family plot in Glasgow. After the loss of his fiancée, he never married.

One of the Directors of the IOMSPCo from the start was Dr Philip Garrratt who was born c1786 and married Helen Miller in 1807, and died 26 June 1845. What is the CONNECTION between Kaylls and Garratt ?

Maybe none, maybe there is one, but J J Kayll was the son of James Kayll (b1752), His brother. Charles Kayll (born 1760), had a daughter, Isabella Kayll, who was J J Kayll’s first cousin. She married John Garratt at K German in 1813.

Does anyone know if the John Garratt in the 1813 German marriage was related to Dr Philip Garratt of Douglas, as I have not been able to work out who his parents were from several possible sets.

NEXT POINT

Isabella Kerr Kayll (John Wood's fiancee) was one of 13 children. The Kayll family seem to have sometimes used middle names from the wife's family, inc Cochrane and Booth. Does anyone know the origin of the Kerr name for Isabella. Even more significantly, one of her sisters (who died in infancy) was Elizabeth Mina Napier Kayll. Napier may well be a coincidence, but the guy who built the engines for Mona's Isle was Robert Napier. I have checked his parents and there is no immediate link, but there may be a distant one. I just do not know, but it is worth exploring.

Finally my email address has changed. Once again, thanks for all your help.
