The note by Moore that he was born in in Castletown is probably correct. The IGI gives many SHIMMIN entries for Castletown but not his. The age at death quoted in the GRO index seems to confirm that he was born in 1820.

I plan to call at Liverpool Record Office tomorrow as they will have a lot about him in connection with the "Porcupine" and his charitable efforts in support of the Children's Hospital and the Seamen's Orphanage.

They are not likely to know his baptism details unless one of the notes about him mentions this.

Although he was a Manxman, most of his life's work was conducted in Liverpool. There will be a talk about him at the Liverpool Hope University in May.
