That depends on what you mean by cost. If you wish to use 1837online, then it costs 10-20 UK pence per page and it might take several pages to find the information you need. But that information is only the reference to the record. If you want to research further, you will have to buy the certificate from yet another site for about £7 (this is not yet a joined up world, but it saves the time and money to reach Central London)!
If you want to research your family tree properly - yes, it will cost you time and money.
