Thanks, Frances. My GGM was, by the looks of it, baptised in St Matthews Douglas in 1862, which probably means she was uneducated if compulsory education started in 1872. She might have lost her father very early, as well, so the family would probably not have been able to afford the penny a week. Assumptions at the moment, but an interesting point. Thanks for your help.
