I am trying to trace the birth of my maternal granfather Louis or Lewis Henry Cowell or Jones.He was born in 1871 in the I.O.M.but the earliest record of him that i can find is on the 1881 cencus where he is listed as Lewis H Jones aged 10yrs lodger with William & Elizabeth Cowell at 20 Drumgold St Onchan,William & Elizabeth were aged 60 & 55 at this time.At sometime they gave him the last name of Cowell & somewhere along the line his first name was changed from Lewis to Louis.There is another entry in the 1881 cencus listing a Lewis H.Cowell aged 5,son of John T.& Anne Cowell living at 23 Bigwell St,Onchan,but I do not think that this is my grandfather as it was known in the family that he was adopted when fairly young.He always talked of a sister named Emily who at some time in her life lived at Shaws Brow in Douglas,I do not know if Emily was his blood related sister or not but i think that she married an Edward Kewley.If anyone can help with any infomation however small I will be very grateful.
