Dear Mr. Brew,
I was browsing the net and came accross your site. My name is Robert Coffey. I am Irish and now live in London. My Grandfather was John Brew from Co. Cork in Ireland. He died 3 years ago aged 82. My Great-Grandfather was also a John Brew.
My grandfather often told me that his ancestors were from the Isle of Man.
I have a degree in history from Trinity College and have studied the history of the Isle of Man. I also have a keen interest in tracing my family history, including the distaff side.
My Grandfather's coat of arms included a purple lion, but there was no known family motto. My Great Grandfather married a member of the O'Sullivan-Bear family, an important Irish family. My Great-Grandfather owned a large accountancy practice in Cork and Dublin. I have some of his papers and personal effects. My Grandfather was also a chartered accountant. There are several surviving Brew relations, including my mother's brother, another John.
I am not sure if you have any interest in this information, but I am quite sure that my family must be related to yours. The surname Brew also occurs in Ireland but has a different entymology. The Isle of Man Brews derive their name from the word breitheamh meaning Judge, whereas the Irish Brews do not.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if you would be able to give me any information.
With thanks,
Robert Coffey
